The vehicle was parked for viewing in a field on the EAST side of highway 2A just north of Teepee Corner down in the Pine Creek coulee before Spruce It Up Garden Centre. The rural property was situated in the area south of Spruce Meadows. Suspect(s) entered the home via a smashed window and it is unknown at this time what items were taken. Suspects are believed to have accessed the property in a vehicle, possibly a truck. Rural residents are being asked to keep an eye on any suspicious people or vehicles in this area, or any others, as crime such as this is on the rise as spring approaches.

The RCMP would like the members to know that there is an increased number of stolen and abandoned vehicles within the MD of Foothills lately. Most of these vehicles are stolen for joy riding purposes so they are later abandoned. A few of these thefts involve the newer editions of Ford trucks that are later sold illegally, often to unsuspecting buyers. If you own the newer F350 series of Ford trucks, ensure you have an immobilizer and at the very least a steering wheel lock as these vehicles are apparently very easy to steal. In addition, if you see an abandoned or suspicious vehicle in your area, contact the RCMP immediately, with license plate, make, model and color, in case the vehicle was recently reported as stolen. The RCMP thanks you for your assistance.

Earlier this month, a resident in the vicinity of Spruce It Up Garden Centre off Highway 2A discovered a sophisticated pipe bomb inside his private mailbox at the front of his property. It is believed to be part of a prank/hoax...albeit a dangerous one. The resident does not believe the act to be malicious, likely some kids thinking it is funny. If you notice a suspicious package in your mailbox or on your property DO NOT try to remove the item or disturb it. Contact the RCMP immediately so they can assess if special agencies need to be called in. Be cautious and careful.

This is a short term commitment with evening meetings every 1-2 weeks over the next few months. New ideas are welcome. If you have a little spare time, even if you can only help a little, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. The first meeting is Tuesday, February 5th at 7:30 pm. Please contact David at 938-2479 to sign up and obtain more information. Thank you for supporting your executive.

On Saturday afternoon on October 27th a wild bobcat was noted in the area known as Policeman's Flats off Dunbow Road (234 Ave) near 40th Street. This wild cat showed little fear of humans so caution is to be exercised if they are spotted. Normally, they feed only on rodents and rabbits. Fish and Wildlife recommends that if you spot a wild cat near your own home to take away any food found outdoors and if the cat is hanging around to make a loud noise to scare them off so that they don't think the yard is safe. Be cautious and if you need assistance because the animal is a physical threat to you or your family or livestock contact Fish and Wildlife at 297-6423.

On October 5th, 2007 Okotoks RCMP responded to a break and enter on 85th Street off of Highway 22x. The owners of the home were at work from 6 am until approx 3pm. Suspects gained entry by breaking the door in with an axe. Inside the home; a dvd player, laptop computer, jewelry and two sets of binoculars were stolen. A neighborhood inquiry leads police to believe it happened around noon to 2pm. A neighbor noticed a white van in area with a lone male driver. Another neighbor noticed a older white chev with 4 youth male occupants that they were sure didn't live in the area.
The RCMP hopes Rural Crime Watch could keep their eyes open for anything in the area.

The Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association would like to invite its members to check out our new website at www.oarpcwa.org. New and fresh ideas and constructive criticism is always welcome so let us know what you think.
In addition, our association is once again hosting an upcoming casino event on Thursday November 1st and Friday November 2nd at Frank Sisson's Silver Dollar Casino. Volunteers are still needed for this event and we are asking our members to please come forward and volunteer. Each shift if about 8 hours long either in the daytime or nighttime, some positions are more involved than others depending on your energy level, and absolutely NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED (honestly). Some positions require a security clearance to be done so let us know soon if you can donate some extra time to your organization. Many executive members have already volunteered and we need your help. So get involved and have some fun. The money we receive goes towards, amongst other things, upcoming programs we have planned such as a fall women's self defense course, a search and rescue seminar, and a spring acreage security trade show. Volunteers can respond by return email or call 938-7431 to leave a message.
Thanks for your support.

On Thursday August 9th and Tuesday August 14th, vehicles parked at both the Cottonwood and Heritage Pointe Golf Courses were broken into during broad daylight. The windows were smashed to gain access. Vehicles were likely targeted because valuables were left in plain view. In addition a home on 80th Street north of Dunbow Road was also broken into and a plasma TV was stolen while the owners were away on holidays. Please remember to remove any valuables from your vehicles or lock them in your trunk, especially when parking in a public parking lot. Let trustworthy neighbors know when you will be away so they can keep an eye on your home. If anyone has any knowledge about these crimes, please call the Okotoks RCMP immediately.

July 6, 2007 On Friday June 29 between 10:50 am and 1:15 pm, during a thunderstorm, thieves broke into a home on Dunbow Road between 16th and 24th Street. Entry was made through an open south facing garage window. Jewelry, including a pearl necklace and earring set, the Order of the Easter Star jewel and 25 year pin, the jewelry box itself, fifty dollars cash and a gym bag with a new canon digital A630 camera. In addition, the owner's 9 year old female tricolored Keeshond dog, with a tattoo and rabies tag, has gone missing. It is not known if she was stolen or ran away, as she is very frightened of thunder. She is medium in size and has a long furry coat with a curled up tail. Some people describe this breed as looking like a small bear. Anyone knowing any information about this robbery or if you have seen this dog, please contact the RCMP at 938-7046.

Rural crime is quiet at the present time. With our present warm weather, the RCMP would like to remind members that discarding cigarette butts from vehicles is not only a serious fire hazard, but it is also illegal. If you witness someone disposing of cigarette butts inappropriately, you CAN report them to the RCMP but ONLY if you are prepared to make a formal written statement and later go to court to testify if necessary. Otherwise, the RCMP will not pursue the complaint, nor write a ticket. Littering carries a minimum fine of $125 so be cautious when you butt out.

The Okotoks RCMP is looking for any new information concerning an unsolved break and enter to a residence in the Ravencrest subdivision back in mid December. Forced entry was used to access the residence and several items were taken. Several vehicles have been identified as being in the area around the time of the offense and it is hoped they may have witnessed the crime in progress. If you have any information concerning this event please call the Okotoks RCMP at 403-938-7046 or crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The Okotoks RCMP would like to thank all Rural Crime Watch/Range Patrol members for their continuing support throughout 2007. As the busy spring and summer seasons come upon us, we would like to remind all citizens to take extra precautions to ensure any household items or vehicles are locked or secured at night or when people are away. During this time of year the RCMP receives a high number of calls regarding thefts from vehicles, thefts from homes, break and enters, and random acts of vandalism. This problem is evident in the town of Okotoks, but is extending into all rural areas. A pamphlet explaining more of these "lock it or lose it" tips is available at the Okotoks RCMP detachment. Please be aware of these kind of activities in your area, and contact the Okotoks RCMP at 938-4202 regarding any of these suspicious activities.
