It has been brought to our attention that at least one local person has been called by someone looking for donations for Okotoks Crime Watch. Please be advised that these calls are not coming from Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch association and as we are not aware of an organization called Okotoks Crime Watch, the calls are most likely a scam.

If you receive a similar call, please be very careful not to give out any personal information and do not make a donation. If you can discretely obtain any details about the callers name, address or phone number and/or have information from call display, please contact Melanie Skidmore at the Okotoks RCMP detachment at 403-938-7046 with that information. Again, we stress do not give out any of your personal information, do not make a donation and do not hesitate to just hang up the phone.

If you have received a call and made a donation please contact Melanie Skidmore at the Okotoks RCMP Detachment at 403-938-7046. If you did not make a donation but have any information, please contact Melanie Skidmore at the Okotoks Detachment.

Here are a couple of things you might consider when donating to Charities:

Fund Raisers are often involved in phone and other special fund raising campaigns. These fund raisers often receive a fairly large percent of the funds. If you contact the charity yourself, directly and make a donation, more than likely all the funds will go to the charity.

You can confirm the Charitable status and obtain the address and a lot of other information, including financial information about a charity from Canada Revenue Agency. The following is a link to a page on their web site where you can search for the charity of your choice.

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/chrts-gvng/lstngs/menu-eng.html

Again we want to stress that Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association is not soliciting donations and if you get a call looking for a donation, please do not donate and do not divulge any personal information. For that mater, it is worth reminding everyone that you should always be very careful when you receive phone, email or other solicitations. Fraudsters are very good at tricking people into believing that they are from a well known reputable organizations when in fact they are criminals.

The executive of Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association would like to wish you a happy holiday season and remind you that car prowlings happen on a regular basis. When your car is parked, please ensure that all personal items and parcels are stored out of sight and that your doors are locked. We also strongly discourage you from leaving your car running when not attended, it takes a long time for an engine to cool, but only seconds for an opportunist to steal a vehicle that is already running, especially if it is left unlocked, and it does happen in our area every winter. Again, we discourage leaving an unattended vehicle running, but we know that some people will feel the need to when it is very cold, so if you feel you must leave it running, please at the very least, leave it locked.

We wish you a happy, safe and crime free holiday season.

This is an update from Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association:

Upcoming Events:

Mark your calendar now. Our Spring General meeting is scheduled for May 11th at 7:30 pm at the Dewinton Community Hall. Our guest speaker will be Ron Stead of the MD of Foothills speaking on Weed and Pest Control.

We also invite you to visit our booth at the Okotoks & District Chamber of Commerce Trade and Life Styles show at the Okotoks Recreation Centre on April 29th from 5pm to 9 pm and April 30th from 9am to 4:30 pm.

We have elections coming up and need new volunteers to keep our organization fresh. Please consider volunteering for an executive position or if not that letting the executive know that you are available to help out from time to time as needs arise. The executive positions are not that onerous as they mainly include attending executive meetings (aproximately 8 per year), planning for the general meetings and a few other duties depending on the position and what tasks that person decides to take on. One upcoming need is for volunteers to help man our booth at the Trade and Lifestyle show on April 29th and 30th. If you are available for this or to provide help on other things, please contact Dave Heinze at 403-938-2479 or any member of the executive.

At this time, there are a couple of security issues that we would like to bring to your attention:

As with most major disasters, the disaster in Japan has caused a number of scams to crop up collecting money for disaster relief. Unfortunately, the money does not always go where the donor expected it to, it sometimes goes to the criminal element that is taking advantage of people’s generosity. Before you make a donation, make sure that you are donating to a legitimate organization and not to a fraudster.

Okotoks RCMP are reminding residents to exercise caution when answering their doors to sales people or trades people working in the area. Ask visitors for their names, names of their company and company contact information so that you can verify their identity. Legitimate sales and service people will have no problem presenting their credentials and their reasons for attending your residence. Take note of their clothing/appearance and their mode of transportation to determine if it's consistent with their reason for attending.

As always, please report any suspicious activity to Okotoks RCMP at 403-938-4202, or by calling 911.

We look forward to seeing you at our Spring General Meeting on May 11th.

March 6, 2011

Personnal data Security:

A link to Canada Revenue Agency's alerts page was recently forwarded to us by our neighbours, "High Country Rural Crime Watch" (Turner Valley), with a warning about letters that appear to be from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) but are actually from fraudsters asking you to email or fax personnal information to an address that is not CRA's. This seems like a good time to remind people to carefully guard all their personnal information and be very careful of letters, phone calls and especially emails requesting personnal information. The criminal element are very good at imitating legitimate organizations like banks and the government, even to the point of providing false call display information.

Please be 100% certain who you are dealing with before divelging any personal information.

The CRA link is: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2008/l080818-eng.html

In the same fan out we provided computer security tips from Windows Secrets newsletter, reprinted with the permission of the editor. www.windowssecrets.com

December 23, 2010

There have been numerous break and enters at a residence in the area. Suspects appear to have jumped over the locked gate to gain access to the house. To date, two windows have been smashed and a tiller was pushed into a pit.

This serves as a reminder to stay alert and to continue to report any suspicious activity to the RCMP at 403-938-4202 or by dialling 911 and asking to be directed to the RCMP.

Members are also reminded to have their house checked when they are away and to keep a special eye out for their neighbours when they are away.

The Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association executive and the Okotoks RCMP wish you all a happy and safe holiday season.

December 5, 2010

General Meeting:

This is a reminder that we will be holding our Fall General Meeting on Wednesday December 8, 2010 at 7:30 pm at the DeWinton Community Centre. Guest speakers will be Sergeant Ian Shardlow from the RCMP and Geoff Carpenter from MD of Foothills Protective Services. They will be discussing Safety and Security around your home, acreage, farm and the MD. The meeting is open to all members and the public.

Lock Car Doors:

Now that the cold weather is upon us it is not uncommon for people to leave their cars running and unattended. Members are cautioned that this practice leaves them very vulnerable to car theft, especially if doors are left unlocked. These practices may also affect your insurance coverage, so you might be wise to confirm what is covered with your insurance company. On the same note the RCMP continually point out that in most car prowlings, at least one door was left unlocked. We cannot stress enough the importance of locking all your car doors when it is unattended and not leaving items of value out in plain sight. Both at home and especially in public places.

Boater Exam:

Please note that this is a copy of the fan out sent out on December 5, 2010, however, as of April 2011, we no longer give the Boater Exam.

Last year we made arrangements with Boaterexam.com to give the boater exam and issue Pleasure Craft Operator Cards. We have given some group exams. While there are no plans to give group exams in the future, we will still give exams privately by appointment. Anyone wishing to take the exam should contact any member of the executive to make arrangements. This is a challenge exam; you only pay if you pass. The amount is $50, the majority of which goes to Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association, and some goes to BoaterExam.com.

March 7, 2008

The RCMP would like the members to know that there is an increased number of stolen and abandoned vehicles within the MD of Foothills lately. Most of these vehicles are stolen for joy riding purposes so they are later abandoned. A few of these thefts involve the newer editions of Ford trucks that are later sold illegally, often to unsuspecting buyers. If you own the newer F350 series of Ford trucks, ensure you have an immobilizer and at the very least a steering wheel lock as these vehicles are apparently very easy to steal. In addition, if you see an abandoned or suspicious vehicle in your area, contact the RCMP immediately, with license plate, make, model and color, in case the vehicle was recently reported as stolen. The RCMP thanks you for your assistance.

February 21, 2008

Earlier this month, a resident in the vicinity of Spruce It Up Garden Centre off Highway 2A discovered a sophisticated pipe bomb inside his private mailbox at the front of his property. It is believed to be part of a prank/hoax...albeit a dangerous one. The resident does not believe the act to be malicious, likely some kids thinking it is funny. If you notice a suspicious package in your mailbox or on your property DO NOT try to remove the item or disturb it. Contact the RCMP immediately so they can assess if special agencies need to be called in. Be cautious and careful.

January 25, 2008

October 30, 2007

On Saturday afternoon on October 27th a wild bobcat was noted in the area known as Policeman's Flats off Dunbow Road (234 Ave) near 40th Street. This wild cat showed little fear of humans so caution is to be exercised if they are spotted. Normally, they feed only on rodents and rabbits. Fish and Wildlife recommends that if you spot a wild cat near your own home to take away any food found outdoors and if the cat is hanging around to make a loud noise to scare them off so that they don't think the yard is safe. Be cautious and if you need assistance because the animal is a physical threat to you or your family or livestock contact Fish and Wildlife at 297-6423.

October 2007

On October 5th, 2007 Okotoks RCMP responded to a break and enter on 85th Street off of Highway 22x. The owners of the home were at work from 6 am until approx 3pm. Suspects gained entry by breaking the door in with an axe. Inside the home; a dvd player, laptop computer, jewelry and two sets of binoculars were stolen. A neighborhood inquiry leads police to believe it happened around noon to 2pm. A neighbor noticed a white van in area with a lone male driver. Another neighbor noticed a older white chev with 4 youth male occupants that they were sure didn't live in the area.

The RCMP hopes Rural Crime Watch could keep their eyes open for anything in the area.

The Okotoks Area Range Patrol and Crime Watch Association would like to invite its members to check out our new website at www.oarpcwa.org. New and fresh ideas and constructive criticism is always welcome so let us know what you think.

In addition, our association is once again hosting an upcoming casino event on Thursday November 1st and Friday November 2nd at Frank Sisson's Silver Dollar Casino. Volunteers are still needed for this event and we are asking our members to please come forward and volunteer. Each shift if about 8 hours long either in the daytime or nighttime, some positions are more involved than others depending on your energy level, and absolutely NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED (honestly). Some positions require a security clearance to be done so let us know soon if you can donate some extra time to your organization. Many executive members have already volunteered and we need your help. So get involved and have some fun. The money we receive goes towards, amongst other things, upcoming programs we have planned such as a fall women's self defense course, a search and rescue seminar, and a spring acreage security trade show. Volunteers can respond by return email or call 938-7431 to leave a message.

Thanks for your support.

On Thursday August 9th and Tuesday August 14th, vehicles parked at both the Cottonwood and Heritage Pointe Golf Courses were broken into during broad daylight. The windows were smashed to gain access. Vehicles were likely targeted because valuables were left in plain view. In addition a home on 80th Street north of Dunbow Road was also broken into and a plasma TV was stolen while the owners were away on holidays. Please remember to remove any valuables from your vehicles or lock them in your trunk, especially when parking in a public parking lot. Let trustworthy neighbors know when you will be away so they can keep an eye on your home. If anyone has any knowledge about these crimes, please call the Okotoks RCMP immediately.

Some people describe this breed as looking like a small bear. Anyone knowing any information about this robbery or if you have seen this dog, please contact the RCMP at 938-7046.

Rural crime is quiet at the present time. With our present warm weather, the RCMP would like to remind members that discarding cigarette butts from vehicles is not only a serious fire hazard, but it is also illegal. If you witness someone disposing of cigarette butts inappropriately, you CAN report them to the RCMP but ONLY if you are prepared to make a formal written statement and later go to court to testify if necessary. Otherwise, the RCMP will not pursue the complaint, nor write a ticket. Littering carries a minimum fine of $125 so be cautious when you butt out.

The Okotoks RCMP is looking for any new information concerning an unsolved break and enter to a residence in the Ravencrest subdivision back in mid December. Forced entry was used to access the residence and several items were taken. Several vehicles have been identified as being in the area around the time of the offense and it is hoped they may have witnessed the crime in progress. If you have any information concerning this event please call the Okotoks RCMP at 403-938-7046 or crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The Okotoks RCMP would like to thank all Rural Crime Watch/Range Patrol members for their continuing support throughout 2007. As the busy spring and summer seasons come upon us, we would like to remind all citizens to take extra precautions to ensure any household items or vehicles are locked or secured at night or when people are away. During this time of year the RCMP receives a high number of calls regarding thefts from vehicles, thefts from homes, break and enters, and random acts of vandalism. This problem is evident in the town of Okotoks, but is extending into all rural areas. A pamphlet explaining more of these "lock it or lose it" tips is available at the Okotoks RCMP detachment. Please be aware of these kind of activities in your area, and contact the Okotoks RCMP at 938-4202 regarding any of these suspicious activities.
